Authors Spotlights with April Zyon

I’m thrilled to have April Zyon as my guest on my Author Spotlights.

Blurb:

Streak politics, and differences in opinions forced Kurt Owens to choose his own path. While it may be outside of the law in many regards he sees it as ensuring justice for the true victims of crimes when the system fails them. It’s his way of seeing the guilty pay, and keeping his own inner beast in check with the violence, and blood it craves.
Everyone thinks having a super power would be great. Alexa Harold would beg to differ. She’s been cursed to see ghosts, the dead not yet having gone to their final resting place, or judgment, or wherever they belong. They track her down, and harass her until she’s ready to go mad. Learning early in life what she needs to avoid has been the only saving grace in keeping her sanity intact.
Then she sees a man who couldn’t possibly be real. It was just her luck that such a prime specimen would in fact be deceased. Only he isn’t, and he’s taking notice of her. With a little temptation, some mystery, and a taunt he leaves her wanting more.
Kurt never thought he’d find his mate outside of the streak, or streak functions. While those of a supernatural inclination aren’t exactly rare, they have had to be careful and keep their population down. Alexa is the woman for him the only one he could ever want or need. And when her life is put in danger by his own past Kurt won’t stop until everyone understands to get to this tiger’s mate, they’ll have to get through him.

Excerpt:

Wrapping his hand around the fresh longneck the bartender slid his way, Kurt lifted it to his lips to take a long drink. His contact was late. Never a good sign when the guy who did all his go-between work wasn’t on time. Especially when it was payday.
Kurt would give the man another half hour before hunting his ass down. Any longer than that and the ditzy blonde at the other end of the bar might garner up some courage to come talk to him. Her friends had been daring her to since they’d caught sight of him. So far she’d resisted their urging despite the number of hungry looks she’d sent his way.
While he had zero problems hooking up with some random, preferably nameless, chick in a bar, that one looked like serious trouble. He could have given anyone a multitude of reasons why. Namely he knew she was trouble by the two thousand dollar shoes, one and a half thou handbag, and he didn’t even want to tally up her outfit. Kurt wasn’t a connoisseur of fashion, not even close, but he’d been around enough to start to recognize the brand names. He had to be observant in what he did, as otherwise he’d end up dead.
He took another long pull from the bottle, camouflaging his perusal of  the group so that they wouldn’t  perceive it as interest. The blonde was downing shots.  Freaking fan-fucking-tastic. If she put enough down, she’d likely get up the courage to actually wobble over in her overpriced stilettos. Not what he wanted tonight. He was here to get paid for the job he’d completed, and then he was going to find a place where no one knew him to crash for many hours of peaceful slumber.
Tensing, he felt someone getting close he let out a breath. Only the waitress. He’d chosen the end of the bar with the wall to his back so he could see the entire place, and so no one could get too close without him knowing. While it sucked if he had to bail, it was tactically the wisest location in case trouble came calling.
And blonde bimbo was making her move. Son of a fucking bitch. She tottered across the bar, closing the distance between them as he waved the bartender over for another cold one. Relief crashed through him as his contact slid onto the empty seat at Kurt’s side.
“Sorry, man, fucking accident six blocks over fucked me right up. I’m late. I sincerely apologize. Didn’t know it was there until I was in the thick of the shit. It’s truly amazing how perfectly decent human beings turn into the Grim fucking Reaper when there’s a DOA at a crash. Couldn’t get a single one of them to move enough to let me through. Fuckers all looked at me like I was the douchebag.”
Lenny signaled the bartender when he’d finished his spiel. Kurt gave the man a few moments to take a drink before he acknowledged him. “No worries,” he said quietly. He didn’t bother mentioning he’d been mere minutes from heading out to hunt his scrawny ass down. No reason to upset the little guy unduly. Besides, Lenny knew what Kurt would do to him if the man didn’t show up for a meet.
“I tucked it into the usual spot,” Lenny said. Which meant Kurt’s payment was secured in Kurt’s truck in the lockbox in the back. “I may have another gig for you. I’ll need to do some background, and check a few of the less clear details, but I should know something in a couple of days.”
Kurt gave a slow nod. The blonde was back at the table of idiotic sorority types downing more shots. “Shoot me a text for a meet when you feel confident about it.”
While Lenny might give the impression of being the unreliable sort, Kurt did trust him. To a degree. The man brokered all the deals, kept Kurt out of it all, and ensured Kurt got paid for what he did. Doing what he did, it wasn’t like Kurt could set up a web page and advertise. That was just begging for a one way ticket to a ten by eight cell for life, if not the chair.
Tipping his beer up he did another visual sweep of the place. Movement from the end of the bar near the girls caught his attention. Son of a bikers, why the hell is it always bikers? Most were good guys even if they did shit that had the law on their asses most of the time. Then there were the wannabes who acted tough, blew smoke, and basically started shit. The guys making lewd gestures to one another about the sorority sisters were very definitely in the second category.
Big, scary looking, and assholes. They’d also been drinking so it was a situation ripe, and ready to explode. Setting his beer down Kurt turned slightly. “You may want to finish that up, and clear out. There’s about to be trouble in here.”
Kurt was itching for a fight. His last job had gone smoothly, too smoothly for him. He was a hands-on sort that liked to get good and bloody. The biker assholes might finally give him a way to let off a bit of steam. And if he happened to break a few of their bones or faces, all the better in his mind. While Kurt’s conscience didn’t pipe up all that often, there was no way he’d risk the guy that was his go-to man.
Uh, shit, right.” Lenny chugged the last of his beer quickly. He reached to his pocket.
“I got it, go.” Kurt pulled off a couple of bills to pay for his beers and Lenny’s. The man took a cut off every job Kurt completed, which was all of them because he was that fucking good, but Kurt still paid for his drinks at every meet.
“One of these days I will pay for a drink, you know.”
“You can try, but we both know who has the better and faster moves. Now go. You’re no use to me in a hospital.”
“The love and concern for my wellbeing I feel pouring off you warms my heart.”
Hearing the sarcasm Kurt turned his eyes on the other man, and growled. Not some pissy ass sound a human could make, but a sound only a born predator could pull from the bowels of his gut.

[Siren Classic: Erotic Contemporary Romance, spanking, HEA]

When Cora Blanchard said goodbye to Jamie Connolly seven years ago, she knew she'd have to see him again eventually. What she doesn't expect is for all of the old feelings she thought she had let go to come rushing back to the surface. It was as if nothing had changed. Fresh out of a highly publicized train wreck of a relationship, Cora is afraid to trust in those feelings or in herself. She tries to remain friends with him, but she's just fooling herself. There's no way she can be with him and not want more.

The moment that Jamie sees her, he realizes that seven years of silence and two thousand miles haven't changed his feelings. The only thing that has changed is Cora. He sees a sadness in her eyes that was never there before. Just as Jamie is starting to earn her love and her trust, someone threatens to tear them apart forever.

General Story Excerpt

He gathered the paint cans and supplies, then moved toward the entrance. As he walked through the main lobby he thought about how he was going to tell Cora. Even more, he thought about the conversation he was going to have with Patty.
He hit the button and waited. When the elevator doors slid open, he was facing one highly surprised Cora. Shit, he thought. This had not gone according to plan.
“Jamie?”
He winced, felt the flush creep up his neck and then said, “So you're never going to believe this incredibly awkward coincidence.”
A cautious look in her eye, she stepped out of the elevator, took in his painting supplies and said, “Try me.”
“Patty. She rented me a vacant office on the second floor. I didn't realize you were here until I called Evan to ask about painting. This isn't nearly as stalker-ish as it seems. I swear to god.”
Cora considered him for a moment and then said, “It's entirely plausible.”
Jamie made a move to lift a hand, paint can and all, and said, “Scouts honor. My decision to rent an office here has nothing to do with you. I was going to drop these off and then text you to warn you. When I talked to Evan about painting, he figured it out. I love 'em, but my family can sometimes be a real pain in the ass.”
“Agreed,” she responded. “But...you weren't a boy scout, were you?”
“Nope. I still had no idea, though. I'm sorry.”
“This has Patty written all over it, Jamie. It's fine,” Cora said, letting him off the hook.
He gave a small sigh of relief, then asked, “Wanna come take a look? Keep in mind, I'm doing some redecorating.”
Cora looked down at her watch and said, “Sure. Let me go drop off this package and I'll be right back.”
Jamie leaned against the bank of elevators, paint bucket and supplies in hand, as he waited for Cora to finish in the mailroom. He shook his head again, still unable to believe Patty. He really couldn't wait to have a conversation with her. At least Cora hadn't freaked out on him.
When he saw her approaching, he pressed the button for the elevator again. After she stepped inside, he moved into the space with her.
As he hit the second floor, she said, “Oh! I bet you're in the office where the holistic doctor was.”
“Yeah, the landlord said it was a doctor's office that left,” Jamie said, a smile pulling at his lips.
He walked down the hallway, and stopped in front of his new office. He set the paint bucket down and dug for his keys. When he unlocked the door, a waft of stale incense and pot met them.
Cora did a slow turn as they stepped inside, then she wrinkled her nose and said, “Seems like maybe they were more into herbal healing. Unless you've picked up a new hobby that I don't know about?”
She turned to face him, her laughter echoing in the empty space around them. In that moment, her hair draped over her shoulder, eyes shining, all traces of sadness were gone. She was absolutely stunning.
He itched to pull her to him, bury his hands in her hair, and press his mouth against hers. He suspected that wouldn't go over well, so instead, he buried his hands in his pocket and grinned.
After a pause, he said, “That hasn't been my thing since college. Nothing to disclose, Dr. Blanchard. What about you?”
“Never tried it. Apparently all I needed to do was come down the hall,” she said with a snort as she wandered into the conference room.
“Yeah. The landlord is tearing out the carpet over the weekend and putting in hardwood. That'll probably get rid of the smell. Plus, I'm going to air it out in here when I paint,” he said.
“Oh, don't tell me you're replacing this beautiful green paint,” Cora said, a smirk pulling at her lips.
His face deadpan, he said, “Don't worry. Just retouching it.”
Her eyes widened as she said, “Please tell me you're kidding.”
“Completely kidding,” he said with a grin. He reached into his back pocket and grabbed the paint sample out, holding it up for her inspection.
Cora visibly relaxed and said, “Warm beige. I can see that. And you said you found cherrywood furniture?”
“I may go with something lighter. I haven't entirely decided.”
“Hardwood? Nice. By the way, in light of recent events, did you just want to order in lunch tomorrow? That way you can get started early tomorrow.”
“Would you mind?” he asked. Cora had always been thoughtful. It was one of the things that he had liked so much about her. She thought about other people in a way that most people didn't.
“It was my idea, Jamie,” she said, drily. “I remember how exciting putting together my office was.”
“What time did you want to plan for? I'll call in the order.”
He watched her glance down at her watch, saw her eyes widen and heard her mutter, “Crap, crap, crap. I'm gonna be late. I'll check my schedule and text you later. Congrats on the new office!”
Before he could speak, she gave him a quick hug and scurried out of the office past him.
“Bye,” he said to her retreating figure.

Adult Only Excerpt

One cup of coffee later, she rolled out her yoga mat in her living room. As she slid effortlessly from pose to pose, she could feel the stress leaving her body. She continued working through her routine until she felt completely loose. When she finally opened her eyes, she jumped a little in surprise. Jamie stood there, coffee cup in hand, wearing nothing but boxers and a smile.
Putting a hand over her heart, she said, “I didn't realize you were there. You scared me.”
Jamie set the cup of coffee he held onto the dining room table and said, “Tell me you're done with that.”
“I'm done with that,” Cora said, wiping a towel over her brow and wresting the ponytail holder out of her hair. As she shook her hair free, she let out a sigh of relief.
“That was,” Jamie said as he walked toward her, “twenty minutes of pure torture, watching that, baby. I had no idea you were that flexible.”
Jamie stood in front of her now, so close that her breasts brushed against his chest. She said, “I didn't even realize you were watching.”
His hand moved up to slide the strap of her tank top off her shoulder. As he lowered his mouth to her skin, he said, “I couldn't help it. That was so fucking sexy.”
Cora tilted her head to the side as his teeth grazed her shoulder. Goose bumps raised on her arms when he cupped her breast through the cotton tank and began to rub his thumb lightly over her nipple. The light touches of his fingers and the barest hint of teeth were driving her absolutely crazy.
“Jamie,” she moaned, when she felt the nip of his teeth against her neck.
He lifted his mouth from her shoulder and tugged her tank top over her head without ceremony. When the cool air swept over her, a fresh wave of goose bumps rose on her skin. She took a final step forward, so that they were pressed together, and pulled his mouth down to hers.
As one kiss melded into another, she let her hands roam the muscles of his back and chest, her nails dragging across his skin. When she finally slipped the waistband of his boxers down and began to stroke him, he said, “Fuck, I love the feel of your hands on my cock.”
Cora slowed the speed of her hand and began to kiss her way down his chest, stopping along the way to run her lips and tongue along the ridges of his stomach. As she settled on to her knees, she asked, “But what about the feel of my mouth on your cock?”
She continued to stroke with one hand as she leaned in to swirl her tongue around the tip of his erection. Licking along the length of it, she flicked her tongue against the sensitive spot just below the head, before she took him fully into her mouth.
One of the hands that had been hanging loosely at his side immediately slid into her hair, gripping it tightly. Cora whimpered around his cock as she felt a flood of arousal between her thighs. She hadn't thought she'd enjoy the slight edge of pain, but the fact that she was dripping with arousal, said otherwise.
Jamie began to rock his hips, thrusting into her mouth. When his hand tightened in her hair, she moaned around him and pressed her thighs together, hoping to alleviate some the throbbing ache.
When she shifted again, and whimpered around his thick cock, Jamie asked, “Is sucking my cock turning you on, Cora? Why don't you play with that pretty pussy for me? Slide those shorts down if you can.”
Cora only hesitated a moment before she moved her hands to slide her shorts down. Once they were at her knees, she wiggled slightly so she wasn't trapped in them.
“That's it,” Jamie groaned. “Spread your thighs, sweetheart. I want to see. Show me how wet you are.”
Needy, Cora dipped her hand between her thighs and held it up. It glistened with her cream.
“Fuck, baby. You're soaked. Rub your clit for me. I wanna see you fall apart.”
Cora moved one hand back up to stroke along his length and slid the other between her thighs. Pressing two fingers inside her aching cunt, she began to rock against her hand as he fucked her mouth. She ground herself against her palm, desperate for any sort of friction on her aching clit.
She wanted to see him lose control. She wanted him feeling as wild and needy as she was. Cora knew just how to make that happen. Moving her hand from around his length, she relaxed her jaw, taking him even deeper into her mouth.
When he nudged the back of her throat, Jamie ground out, “Sweet fucking christ. Just like that.”
As the beginnings of release started, she whimpered around his cock. She shifted her hand and now rubbed tight circles around her throbbing clit. The ache only intensified.
Almost lightheaded, she reached underneath, lightly massaging his balls. When he gritted out, “Oh, fuck. Like that,” and gave her hair another rough tug, she cried out around his cock, release barreling through her like a freight train.
Seconds later he said, “Oh christ, baby. I'm gonna come,” as he erupted in her mouth.
Cora felt the hot liquid hit the back of her throat and continued to swallow until the grip on her hair had loosened slightly. Her body throbbed with release in time with his, but it wasn't nearly enough. Something about this man made her all but insatiable.

The Beats Within is available at: www.boostrand.com/the-beast-within-walsh

As usual, Let us start our chat by asking her some personal questions. I promise to be gentle with you. Well! I’ll try and do my best.
Here’s Maggie,

Q: Welcome Maggie, I’m so glad you could be us.
A: Hi Mya, it’s so nice to be here. Thank you for inviting me.

Q: Can you tell us a little about yourself? Are you married or do you have kids?
A: I am married. My husband and I have been together for it will be 25 years this month. We have been married for almost 17 of those, and we have 4 children, 2 girls and 2 boys.

Q: did you find it hard to start writing?
A: I started writing very young, but never had the guts to show my stories to anyone. My teenage son and I love books and talk about them all the time. He mentioned how he wants to be an author when he grows up and I told him about my writing. He encouraged me to finally write a new story and submit it. That was really hard. Finding the courage to finally put myself out there and open myself up for rejection, but I figured I needed to set the example for him.

Q: What one word would you use to describe yourself?
A: Wow, that’s hard. I would have to say, stubborn, but don’t let my husband hear that.

Q: A little bird told me that you enjoy reading. Is it true?
A; I can’t read enough. There is not enough time in a day for all the books I want to read. Last year I read over 350 books. That breaks down to almost one a day. It’s only April and I have already read 142 books this year.

Q: what is your favorite Book and why?
A: That is a really hard question. I don’t know if I can choose just one. One that has really stuck with me for years and I have read about a dozen times is Flashback by Dan Simmons. It’s very provocative. Its set in the future of the United States and most of the population is hooked on a drug that will bring them back to a good memory in their life. Every time I read it, I get chills because I can see a truth to the story. There are too many people on too many drugs for one reason or another and it seems like a lot of people want instant everything these days, including instant gratification, so I can see this drug, if it were real, being very popular. This book makes me really think about my future as well as what the future holds for my kids and grand-children.

Q: Do you have pets? If so, how many?
A:  Yes, I have one dog. She’s a hound and she’s my little mush.

Q: How did you get started writing (genre of your book) story?
A: I never even knew this genre existed until about two and a half years ago. I got a book on my Kindle and started reading and it took me until chapter 4 before I realized they were talking about two men. I loved it. I bought another that was the first book in The Lost Shifter series by Stephani Hecht and I was hooked. Then my own stories started to flow in my head like never before. And my characters where all men. I fell in love with the genre. My latest book, The Beast Within actually came to me while watching Adam Lambert’s Glamnation Tour video. I love music, it’s a huge part of my life and I always thought about writing something with a rock band. When I saw Adam Lambert kiss his bass guitarist right there on stage in front of thousands of people, I started thinking. I know the guy is straight, but he didn’t seem to mind. It was all an act for the audience. I thought, now that could make for a good book. And The Beast Within was born.

Q: Your  book, Maggie. Can you tell us a bit about your main characters?
A: The Beast Within is about Sky Taylor and Ghost Heart. When Sky was, 18 he and his brother and Sky’s boyfriend, the love of his life Mitch Fox, are in a band together and trying to get a record deal. The deal comes through, but they only want Sky. So he has to choose between the love of his life and his brother or all his dreams coming true. Well Sky is young and naïve, and he chooses stardom. But he also betrays Mitch by sleeping with the record exec. Fast forward 7 years and Sky is at the top of the charts, but his Glamrock band needs a new lead guitarist. In walks the hottest guitarist in the world. He is super talented and gorgeous as hell, but he’s straight. One day Sky sees a tattoo on Ghost’s back that is a memorial to his ex-love Mitch and his world crashes down around him when he finds out that Mitch killed himself after what Sky had done to him. The chemistry between Ghost and Sky is hot from their first meeting, but Sky struggles with moving forward in his life after what he did to Mitch. Ghost knows all about what Sky did and he has demons of his own that stop him from wanting anything more than a one night stand. But he can’t deny the pull to Sky and the two fight with everything they have to not give in to their growing attraction.
